Ace of Hearts

Wandering through a lonely town, I saw an open door

Walked into a poker game with room for just one more.

My money went and then my truck and last my hound dog Abel.

But deeper still that hole I dug, for the sake of my love Mabel.

Ace of Hearts, you faithless card that stole my life away

I played my part, now have a heart, for it’s my dying day.

I’d promised her we’d marry soon, when I had a home at last.

But on that fateful night in June, my dreams were fleeing fast.

With one pot left, the biggest yet, I took a final stand.

I bet the one thing I had left—my dear sweet Mabel’s hand.

Ace of Hearts, you faithless card that stole my life away

I played my part, now have a heart, for it’s my dying day.

I drew three kings, and hope grew strong when the next card made it four.

Across the way three aces lay, and the dealer dealt two more.

As he lay that last hand down, a distant church bell pealed,

And when I saw the Ace of Hearts, I knew my fate was sealed.

Ace of Hearts, you faithless card that stole my life away

I played my part, now have a heart, for it’s my dying day.
